Investing in ORGANIC CACAO plantations CREATES and EXPANDS a lush, vibrant FOREST ECOSYSTEM, brimming with a great variety of plants and animals, all of which enhance the cacao’s productivity. Unlike monocrops, the best environment to grow organic cacao in is a biodiverse one. 

Cedar trees protect the young cacao plants from too much sun, and these trees drop their leaves at just the right season to allow the cacao to get more sun to grow. Banana trees continue to provide the perfect amount of shade, while coffee, cinnamon plants, and exotic flora enrich the soil (enhancing the cacao's taste). Butterflies, ants, woodpeckers, tropical birds, and hens all help to pollinate and provide fertile ground for the cacao while thriving themselves in this environment.


Soil Health

The happy-go-lucky organic cacao circus is in stark contrast to the dead-zone of sugar cane monocrop fields that we sometimes see when visiting cacao forests. The sugar cane is burned for harvest, leaving torched earth and soil acidification. Soil is the foundation to nourishing the planet and fundamental to all life on earth, including humans. We need healthy soil to get the nutrients we need from food, just as much as we need it to capture CO2 and curb climate change.

We purchase Transparent Trade cacao, where all prices are published and farmers get above market premium prices. We hear from smallholding cacao forest farmers about how happy they are to be earning double what their sugar cane farming neighbors earn per hectare and how they can continue to invest, while living in a beautiful ecosystem.

Stevia is inherently ecological as one of the most efficient and sustainable sweetening ingredients: stevia delivers 20-35 times the sweetness compared to sugar cane per hectare, so you need less land to sweeten the same amount. NOMOSU'S virgin stevia extract is purified solely with water, the water is recirculated, and this is powered by renewable energy, making the whole process ecological. This unique virgin stevia has achieved circular economy awards for how the stevia plants are grown and utilized, with the lowest carbon footprint in the sector. Stevia plants also have a vast carbon capture capacity via photosynthesis, benefiting the health of the atmosphere.
